Valentine Greeting Cards Biography

Source(google.com.pk)
I picked this up over the summer with patient plans of waiting to offer it for sale when we got close to Valentine's Day. Of course I completely forgot about it. The only reason I'm sharing the image with you today instead of some time years in the future is because I luckily happened upon it towards the top of a pile of miscellaneous collectibles earlier today! (I love piles of miscellaneous collectibles!)

This Valentine dates to the mid-1930's. It stands 5-1/2 inches tall and is 4 inches wide at the base. On card stock, this vibrantly colored vintage die cut greeting card is a card within a card. Observe:

Greta Garbo Valentine

That's how this Valentine appears in its normal state, but Greta's "Ticket" folds open revealing a message more definitely identifying the figure as Garbo:

Greta Garbo Valentine Opened

    You may not recognize me
    In this GARB-O Valentine
But I have no GREAT-A wish
Than to win you for all mine.

A heart at the bottom right of the card carries the text "I Tank I Go Home" with "If you won't be my Valentine" underneath.

Beneath that text is a pre-scored area that's meant to be folded out as a stand.

The back is blank (mine has a message written on it).

No mention of manufacturer appears on this vintage greeting card, only the text in small type "Made in U.S.A."

Mine is currently at 5-day auction on eBay (Sold for $14.69), but it's a neat piece of ephemera I definitely wanted to highlight forever on the site.
Word History: Lovers and the greeting card industry may have Geoffrey Chaucer to thank for the holiday that warms the coldest month. Although reference books abound with mentions of Roman festivals from which Valentine's Day may derive, Jack B. Oruch has shown that no evidence supports these connections and that Chaucer was probably the first to link the saint's day with the custom of choosing sweethearts. No such link has been found before the writings of Chaucer and several literary contemporaries who also mention it, but after them the association becomes widespread. It seems likely that Chaucer, the most imaginative of the group, invented it. The fullest and perhaps earliest description of the Valentine's Day tradition occurs in Chaucer's Parlement of Foules, composed around 1380, which takes place "on Seynt Valentynes day,/Whan every foul cometh there to chese [choose] his make [mate]."
Freely admired her, and she felt sure that it was he who had sent her a beautiful valentine; but her sister seemed to think so lightly of him (all young ladies think lightly of the gentlemen to whom they are not engaged), that Penny never dared mention him, and trembled and blushed whenever they met him, thinking of the valentine, which was very strong in its expressions, and which she felt guilty of knowing by heart.
Brother Jacob by Eliot, George View in context
Besides all this, he had read his Bible, including the apocryphal books; Poor Richard's Almanac, Taylor's Holy Living and Dying, The Pilgrim's Progress, with Bunyan's Life and Holy War, a great deal of Bailey's Dictionary, Valentine and Orson, and part of a History of Babylon, which Bartle Massey had lent him.

The MetroPostcard Club of New York has some great reference material on their web-site  There is a tab for ‘publishers’ and under ‘V’ you can find a good history of the history of the Valentine and affiliated companies. I doubt that the negatives are still available but the number of postcards and other printed items published by them is significant and readily available on the Internet. Further research through a library or archive as to the fate of the company might provide the answer that you seek.

who is/was Valentine-Black Co Ltd? I was clean out an estate that had some small photographs of Vancouver which were published by Valentine-Black Co. of Toronto. Is it related to the Valantine and Sons Publishers? Are the negatives of these photographs still in existance?

I have two Valentine-Edy,Winnipeg cards in my collection. One of the Senator Hotel, Saskatoon and another of the Post Office,Weyburn,Sask. (postmarked July 1943). Both have back designs indentical to Photogelatine Engraving Co. (PECO) cards.Has anyone else come across this ? The Winnipeg Valentine’s must have had some relation to PECO in Ottawa during the early 1940s, but I’ve never seen any mention of this in Canadian Valentine card history articles. No listing in Ron Souch’s Western Canada Valentine book either. Curious.

If you live in or near a location where there is a postcard show, the dealers at the show are always available to comment on card values. The page titled ‘Show Calendars’ on this web-site always has a list of the upcoming shows in Ontario. The next TPC show in the Toronto area is June 3rd and will have about 25 dealers in attendance. If you cannot get to a show, the several internet auction sites for postcards, also listed on our web-site on the ‘Links and Connections’ page will give you a good idea of values. Put in Valentine and the subject in the search field and you are very likely to see the same card on offer.
